If the canopy is thinning and you're tempted to feed it, get an assessment first; thin canopies are usually a root story, not a nutrition story.
The most dangerous season in a mature oak's life is the one when contractors are on the property. Driveways, additions, pools, and utility trenches all reach into root zones, and the tree pays the bill years later, after everyone's gone. If a project is coming, bring the tree into the plan early: route trenches around the root zone or bore under it rather than cutting through, keep equipment, spoil piles, and material staging off the soil under the canopy, and fence the root zone so the protection actually happens when you're not watching. None of these accommodations cost much at planning time, and all of them are impossible to retrofit once the damage is in the ground.
