What Fails First in a Venice Storm

The pattern here is fairly consistent. Laurel oaks go over once the sandy soil is saturated and the wind swings, because the root plate lets go before the trunk does. Overextended live oak limbs snap at the point where the weight is furthest from the trunk, usually the limb somebody has been meaning to have reduced for two years. Cabbage palms shed fronds and old boots across everything. Pines snap partway up.

The First Hours After the Storm
