Port Charlotte lots are mostly a quarter acre on a platted grid, and the trees on them did not get put there with a plan. Slash pines volunteered in the side yard and are now standing well over the roof. Laurel oaks are hollowing out right on schedule, because a laurel oak is a short lived tree and it starts coming apart while it still looks healthy from the street. Cabbage palms got left where they stood and now carry a boot full of dead fronds out over the lanai. All of it ends up close to the house, because the lots are small and the setbacks are tight.
On the water the job changes. South Gulf Cove sits on a canal system that runs out to the Myakka River, and the harbor front streets at Edgewater and Grassy Point face open Charlotte Harbor. Salt wind off that much open water thins one side of a crown and pushes the whole tree inland, so the weight is already off center long before a storm arrives. Between a seawall and a pool cage there is no drop zone worth the name. Those come down in pieces on rope, not on the ground in one go.

Access is the first thing we look at. Off Midway, Quesada and Peachland the driveways are short and the front yards are narrow, so the chipper sits in the street and the crew works around parked cars and a mailbox nobody wants clipped. In the gated communities we clear the access route with the management office first and go in the way they want us to. Out toward El Jobean and the Myakka River side the lots open up, but the pines are taller and the ground is softer.
The other thing we watch is what is left over from the storms. Split leaders and cracked unions in live oak do not always show from the driveway, and a pine that lost its top will often hold on for a year or two before it goes. When we are up in a tree to trim it, we look at the rest of it. If something is going to be a problem we tell you now instead of on the emergency call.

Trees come out for all kinds of reasons. Dead or declining, leaning toward the house, roots lifting a driveway, or simply the wrong tree in the wrong place. We look at the tree, what sits under it and how we can get to it, then pick the method that puts the least risk on your property.
Small lots and narrow side yards are the hard ones. That is where the tracked lift and the climbers earn their keep. Where there is room to work, a crane lifts whole sections out over the house instead of bringing them down through it.

Regular trimming does more than tidy things up. It takes out dead and diseased branches before they drop, thins the canopy so wind moves through it, and lets sunlight reach the grass and beds underneath.
Cuts get made where the tree can seal them. Sloppy pruning invites decay and pushes weak regrowth, which is why the species matters and why an arborist sets the plan before a saw comes out.

What does tree removal cost?
It depends on the tree, what sits under it and how we can reach it. A big oak leaning over a roof is a different job than a dead pine in an open yard. Estimates are free with no obligation, so text us and we will come look.
Do you take the stump out too?
We can. Stump grinding is a separate line on the estimate, so you can add it or leave the stump. Grinding it down lets sod or a planting bed go back over the spot.
How often should my trees be trimmed?
That depends on the species, the age of the tree and what is underneath it. Our arborist will tell you what your trees actually need at the estimate, including which ones can wait another year.
Can you reach a tree in my backyard?
Usually, yes. Between tracked lifts, bucket trucks, a crane and climbers there aren't many spots we can't work. If the access really is closed off, we will tell you that up front instead of guessing.
How do you take payment?
Cash, check or credit card. Credit cards carry a 3% fee.
Do I need a permit just to trim a tree at my Port Charlotte house?
Routine trimming on your own property generally does not need one, but removal is a different question. Port Charlotte is unincorporated, so Charlotte County tree rules apply, and heritage trees are meant to be preserved unless the zoning official approves a hardship. We check the tree against the county rules before we quote so you know what you are dealing with.
My neighbor's lot is vacant and the pines are leaning at my house. Can you cut them?
Not without the lot owner's say so. That is a common problem on this grid, because so many platted lots never got built on. What we can do is trim back to your property line where the law allows it and give you a written note on what we see, which is usually what you need to start the conversation with the owner or the county.
Can you work a canal lot in South Gulf Cove?
Yes, and we plan for it. There is no room to stage behind those houses and a seawall does not want a hundred pound piece landing on it. We rig down from the top, run the wood out the front through the driveway, and keep weight off the cage and the dock.
